The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) has issued a safety reminder urging motorists to remain inside their vehicles during highway emergencies. The department emphasizes that highways are designed for high-speed travel, and exiting a vehicle can lead to dangerous situations.

Connecticut Department of Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto stated, “Every time someone gets out of their car on a highway, they put themselves at serious risk.” He advised staying inside the vehicle with seat belts fastened and pulling off the road as far as possible to ensure safety.

Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection Commissioner Ronnell A. Higgins also stressed the importance of these measures. “Please pay attention to these basic measures to keep drivers and their passengers safe,” he said. Higgins highlighted the need for collective efforts to enhance safety on state highways.

With an increase in roadside incidents, the Connecticut State Police (CSP) is reinforcing this message. CSP Colonel Daniel Loughman noted that remaining in the vehicle is crucial during breakdowns or emergencies. “When your vehicle is disabled, your first instinct might be to step outside and assess the problem. However, this can put you at greater risk,” Loughman explained.

CTDOT advises several safety tips for drivers experiencing highway emergencies:

- Pull over safely into the right shoulder.

- Call 911 for assistance.

- Stay in your vehicle with seat belts fastened and hazard lights on.

- Be visible by using reflective gear if available.

- Avoid exiting the vehicle under any circumstances unless there is a fire.

Commissioner Eucalitto concluded by emphasizing education's role in reducing preventable fatalities: “Our goal is to educate drivers and reduce the number of preventable fatalities. These simple steps could save your life.”
