Amazon received $38 million in subsidies, tax breaks, and grants from Connecticut communities for three projects.
Advocacy group Good Jobs First, which opposes such subsidies, found Connecticut provided the 22nd-highest amount of grants and breaks among U.S. states to the nearly $1-trillion company.
Connecticut is ranked behind Florida (13 projects/$43 million) and ahead of North Carolina (5 projects/$31 million), Pennsylvania (4 projects/$30 million), and Georgia (5 projects/$27 million).
The most expensive subsidy provided in Connecticut was by the North Haven government, which offered $20 million from the Urban and Industrial Site Reinvestment Tax Credit and $5 million in sales and use tax exemptions, as well as permit fee reductions.
The second largest subsidy was worth $9 million from the Town of Windsor for a three-year city property tax and permit fee abatement.
There were no developments which received undisclosed subsidy amounts.
Connecticut subsidies often benefit large companies that the state tries to lure away from the New York area.
The state appropriately discloses the cost of subsidies, who received them, and if outcome goals were met.
As of Nov. 17, 2022, Amazon had received 310 separate tax break deals from local and state governments across the U.S., totaling $5.14 billion. The state of Virginia was home to the largest portion of these taxpayer-subsidized Amazon projects.
