The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) has voiced its opposition to a proposed bill that would require unemployment insurance coverage for striking workers. The statement was made by NFIB State Director Andy Markowski following a Labor & Public Employees Committee hearing on the matter.
Markowski expressed concerns about the implications of such legislation, stating, "State government shouldn’t pick sides in labor disputes, and small business owners and other state taxpayers shouldn’t have to pay for employees who choose to be out of work on strike." He further argued that "paying employees who are not working because they are on strike is an unprecedented policy change and goes against the purpose behind the unemployment benefits system, a system that is funded through taxes on small business owners and other employers."
This bill mirrors a similar one vetoed last year by Governor Ned Lamont. NFIB remains steadfast in its advocacy for small businesses across the United States. The organization, which has been active for 80 years, continues to support independent business owners both at the federal level and within all 50 states.
