The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), a prominent small business advocacy group in Connecticut, has issued a statement urging Governor Ned Lamont and the newly convened General Assembly to prioritize the needs of small businesses. The statement was released by NFIB State Director Andy Markowski ahead of Governor Lamont's State of the State Address.

"As Governor Lamont addresses the newly convened General Assembly later today, small businesses throughout the state urge him and lawmakers not to forget the challenges facing Main Street enterprises," Markowski stated. He emphasized that as priorities are set and legislation is developed, it is crucial not to harm small business job creators but rather create solutions beneficial for Main Street rather than solely for large corporations and labor organizations.

Markowski highlighted ongoing issues such as workforce hiring difficulties and rising business expenses, particularly unsustainable health insurance premiums and high energy costs. He urged lawmakers to avoid exacerbating these challenges with new legislation. Instead, he called for policies that would address these problems and stimulate economic growth. Additionally, maintaining Connecticut’s fiscal guardrails responsibly is essential to prevent future tax increases and ensure long-term fiscal stability conducive to job growth.

According to NFIB's recent research, there was an increase in small business optimism in December after elections, reaching its highest level since June 2021. Inflation remains a significant concern for 20% of business owners due to higher input and labor costs, surpassing labor quality as their primary issue.
