The Rocky Hill-Glastonbury Ferry is set to commence its 2025 season on Saturday, April 19, announced the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT). The Chester-Hadlyme Ferry, on the other hand, began its operations on April 1.

High water levels on the Connecticut River delayed the Rocky Hill-Glastonbury Ferry’s opening. Now, it is ready to transport passengers until November. Last year, the ferries transported over 100,000 passengers and 45,000 vehicles.

"We’re thrilled both ferries will soon be open for the season. Whether you’re riding a bike, going for a walk, or traveling by car, the ferry is an enjoyable way to travel,” remarked Benjamin Limmer, Connecticut Department of Transportation Bureau Chief of Public Transportation. He added, “Just in the first few weeks, we’ve welcomed approximately 1,000 passengers on board the Chester-Hadlyme Ferry. We hope many will come out, take a trip, and see firsthand what makes this a memorable experience for all.”

The Rocky Hill-Glastonbury Ferry, dating back to 1655, is America’s oldest continuously operating ferry. Historically, it used horsepower for movement but has been modernized over the centuries. Today, it operates with a three-car barge, Hollister III, towed by the diesel-powered tugboat Cumberland.

The Chester-Hadlyme Ferry, operational since 1769 and managed by CTDOT since 1917, accommodates eight or nine cars and 49 passengers. Equipped with a rudder and propeller on both ends, it efficiently operates without turning around.

Operating hours for the ferries are weekdays from 7 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. and weekends from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fares can be paid using the Token Transit app or by scanning a QR code at the landings.

Ferry operations may be affected by weather, water levels, or mechanical issues. Any operational changes are shared online, and the public can register for alerts via CTroads.com.

Additional details on the ferries, including fares, schedules, and history, are available at CT.gov/DOT/CTferries.
