The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is advancing plans for a new maintenance facility and salt shed in Stonington. The project will be situated at 321 Liberty Street and will replace the existing maintenance facility on Welles Road in Groton, which will be repurposed into a cold storage facility.

The upcoming Stonington Maintenance Facility will cover 31,500 square feet and include a split-story structure. It will feature a 25,000-square-foot bay area with 17 maintenance vehicle bays and two drive-through wash bays. Additionally, there will be a 6,500-square-foot office core area. The building's design incorporates steel frame construction with exterior steel siding and masonry. Final design plans are expected to be ready by September 2025, with state funding supporting the project.

According to CTDOT, the current facilities in Groton are outdated and fail to meet modern standards. They also do not comply with environmental agreements between CTDOT and the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP). Despite these changes, the number of personnel and types of operations at the site will remain consistent.

CTDOT emphasizes the importance of public involvement in such projects. "It is the CTDOT’s policy to keep the public informed and involved when such projects are undertaken," they stated, encouraging community input to aid in project development.
