The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is preparing to build a new maintenance facility and salt shed in Stonington. The development, named the Stonington Maintenance Facility, will be located at 321 Liberty Street.

The planned structure will replace the current facility at 150 Welles Road in Groton, which will be converted into a cold storage facility. The new building will cover 31,500 square feet, with a split story design. It will include a 25,000 square feet bay area featuring 17 maintenance vehicle bays and two drive-through wash bays. Additionally, there will be a 6,500 square feet office core area. The construction will utilize steel framing with exterior steel siding and masonry. According to the current schedule, final design plans are expected by September 2025. The project will receive state funding.

CTDOT states that the project is necessary because the existing facilities on Welles Road are functionally outdated and do not meet current standards set by CTDOT. Moreover, the site does not comply with environmental agreements between CTDOT and the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP). Importantly, the number of personnel and type of maintenance operations will remain unchanged due to this project.

CTDOT emphasizes its policy to keep the public informed and involved during such projects: "It is important that the community share its concerns with us to assist in the project's development."
