The Yale women’s crew team advanced all of its boats to the grand finals at the Ivy League Championship after winning each heat on May 16. The event took place on Cooper River in Pennsauken, New Jersey.
This achievement means that every Yale boat will compete for championship titles in Sunday’s races, which determine not only individual boat winners but also overall team honors and qualification for the NCAA Championship. The performance reflects the team’s strength across all categories.
Yale’s third varsity eight began the day with a win, finishing ahead of Brown, Princeton, and Columbia. The first varsity eight also secured victory in its heat against Columbia, Dartmouth, and Cornell. The second varsity eight continued Yale’s success by finishing first over Brown, Columbia, and Penn. Finally, the varsity four wrapped up with another win over Penn, Brown, and Cornell.
Friends of YWC Head Coach Will Porter said: “We locked in today and took the first step.” He added: “The job is not done. There will be some great racing tomorrow and we hope to take the next step. We still have plenty to work on.”
Sunday’s schedule includes six grand final races starting at 8:00 a.m., culminating with the Varsity Eight Grand Final at 9:30 a.m. The winner of this race will be crowned Ivy League Champion and receive the Sally P. Shoemaker Trophy. Additional awards include a Team Trophy for highest point total across all boats and an automatic NCAA Championship berth for top-performing teams among V8, 2V8, and V4 crews.
Yale Bulldogs Women’s Rowing competes as part of NCAA Division I within both the Ivy League and Eastern Association of Women’s Rowing Colleges; it operates as an intercollegiate sports program affiliated with Yale University athletics based in New Haven according to the official website.
