Yale announced on Apr. 27 that its men’s tennis team has earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championship, marking the program’s first appearance in the tournament since 1977.
This development is significant as it ends a nearly five-decade absence from the national stage for Yale’s men’s tennis program. The Bulldogs will travel to Urbana, Illinois, where they are set to face No. 14 ranked Illinois in the opening round on Friday, May 1.
The current Yale squad is led by interim head coach Eduardo Ugalde and finished the regular season with 16 wins—the most since the 2016–17 campaign—and a No. 44 ranking in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national rankings. Notable victories this spring included matches against Arkansas, No. 30 Cornell, Oklahoma State, and Middle Tennessee State.
Illinois enters postseason play with a record of 22-7 overall and a conference record of 10-3 in Big Ten competition. The Illini recently lost to Ohio State in the conference semifinals.
Yale’s last NCAA tournament appearance was in 1977 when it also recorded a strong season with sixteen victories at a time when fewer teams were selected for championship play. As they prepare for their matchup against Illinois, the Bulldogs aim to build on their recent successes and make an impact at this year’s national tournament.
