The Yale heavyweight crew team competed on April 18 at the Housatonic River in Derby, Connecticut, facing Ivy League rivals Penn and Columbia for the Blackwell and Colgan Cups.
The event featured two-mile races among each school’s top four varsity boats. The first varsity teams raced for the Blackwell Cup, while the second varsity teams vied for the Colgan Cup. According to results from the competition, Penn’s fifth varsity boat won the opening race against Yale’s fourth varsity entry. In a close finish during the main event, Penn’s first varsity edged out Yale to claim the Blackwell Cup.
Penn also secured victory in the second varsity race to take home the Colgan Cup, with Yale finishing as runner-up. However, Yale managed a win in another closely contested race when its third varsity boat finished ahead of Penn.
These races are significant as they continue longstanding traditions between Ivy League rowing programs and serve as key benchmarks during their spring seasons.
Looking ahead, Yale is scheduled to return to Lake Carnegie in New Jersey on April 25 to compete against Princeton and Cornell for the Carnegie Cup.
