The University of Connecticut softball team lost to the top-seeded Texas A&M Aggies, 17-3 in five innings, during the opening round of the College Station Regional on May 15. The game took place at Davis Diamond and sends UConn into the loser’s bracket of the regional tournament.

The loss is significant as it marks UConn’s first run-rule defeat since March 25. The Huskies struggled defensively and allowed a season-high 17 runs and five home runs, with nine of those runs coming with two outs. Despite these challenges, UConn managed to turn two double plays, matching their season high.

Freshman Caprice Bohmer made her first career NCAA Tournament start for UConn but gave up six earned runs on six hits over just over an inning. Redshirt-junior Sydnee Koosh relieved Bohmer and surrendered four earned runs off a grand slam before Bohmer briefly returned to pitch again. Sophomore Amber Bretton and graduate Jessica Walter also saw time in the circle; Walter finished out the game with 2.1 innings pitched, allowing two earned runs on four hits while adding a strikeout.

Savannah Ring provided some offense for UConn with her fifth home run of the season—a solo shot off the left field scoreboard in the third inning. In the fifth inning, Cat Petteys drove in Caylee De Meo from second base with a single off the right field wall, extending her own on-base streak to sixteen games. Kaitlyn Breslin then brought home Ring on a groundout to shortstop.

UConn now moves into an elimination game against McNeese State Cowgirls scheduled for Saturday, May 16 at 5:30 p.m., which will be streamed on ESPN+. Updates will be available through UConn Softball’s social media channels.
