The University of Connecticut softball team lost to Creighton University, 5-2, on May 9 in Chicago, forcing a winner-take-all game for the BIG EAST Championship.
This result means both teams will compete again for the conference title. UConn started freshman Caprice Bohmer in the circle. Bohmer pitched five innings, allowing three runs on six hits and recording six strikeouts. Creighton took an early lead with a double in the first inning and extended it with two-out hits in the third. UConn responded when Kaitlyn Breslin hit a sacrifice fly that scored Savannah Ring from third base.
Creighton increased its advantage with another run in the fifth inning via a sacrifice fly. Sydnee Koosh entered as relief pitcher for UConn in the sixth inning and finished out the game, giving up two runs over two innings. In their final chance at bat, UConn loaded the bases and Breslin added her second RBI of the day with another sacrifice fly that brought home Heidi Barber.
Several players reached personal milestones during this matchup. Cat Petteys extended her on-base streak to 14 games and recorded her nineteenth multi-hit game of the season. Kaitlyn Breslin had her second multi-RBI performance at this year’s tournament and now has seventeen RBIs for the season. Savannah Ring also achieved her nineteenth multi-hit game while Haley Coupal reached base safely for fifteen consecutive games.
Ava Calciano’s on-base streak moved to ten straight games while Heidi Barber’s is now eight games long. However, Kaitlyn Kibling saw her own impressive twenty-three-game on-base streak come to an end during this contest.
The Huskies were held to just two runs—marking their lowest scoring output at a BIG EAST Tournament since 2024—and went one-for-one with runners in scoring position.
