The University of Connecticut baseball team will host St. John’s for a three-game series at Elliot Ballpark starting April 16, with both teams vying for first place in the BIG EAST standings.
This matchup is important as both UConn and St. John’s have strong records in conference play, making the outcome significant for their positions atop the league table.
UConn enters the weekend with a 20-18 overall record and a 6-3 mark in conference play, having won its first three BIG EAST series against Xavier, Creighton, and Butler. St. John’s stands at 18-18 overall and 5-1 in league games after sweeping Seton Hall and winning a series against Georgetown.
St. John’s pitcher Liam O’Leary leads his staff with four wins and holds a 2.97 earned run average, ranking among the top pitchers in the conference. Adam Agresti is second in the BIG EAST with 14 home runs and leads with 38 runs batted in this season.
For UConn, Jackson Marshall has contributed significantly on offense by leading the team with 13 doubles, ten home runs, a .362 batting average, and thirty-three runs batted in. On the mound, Cayden Suchy boasts a team-best ERA of 2.45 while topping all BIG EAST pitchers with seventy-five strikeouts so far this year.
Historically, UConn leads its all-time series against St. John’s by seventy-two wins to sixty-one losses; last season saw UConn sweep St. John’s on their home field for the first time ever during a three-game set.
Pitching matchups are set for Charlie West versus Liam O’Leary on Friday night at 6:05 p.m., Cayden Suchy against Evan Chaffee on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m., and Oliver Pudvar facing Ian Mowad Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
