The University of Connecticut baseball team announced on Apr. 30 that it will face East Tennessee State University for the first time in program history during a non-conference weekend series at Elliot Ballpark. The Huskies, holding a six-game win streak and a 26-20 record, will play the Buccaneers (27-15) with games scheduled for Friday at 3:05 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m., and Sunday at 11 a.m.
This matchup is notable as it marks the inaugural meeting between UConn and ETSU on the baseball field. The Huskies enter the series following recent successes, including a sweep against Georgetown and a midweek victory over Rutgers. After struggling in close games earlier this season, UConn has now secured consecutive one-run wins.
Pitching remains a strength for UConn, with Cayden Suchy and Charlie West leading both their conference and ranking nationally in strikeouts. Oliver Pudvar has delivered three straight starts of seven innings each. Charlie Hale leads the Big East Conference with six wins this season while maintaining an earned run average of 2.65 across seventeen appearances.
Offensively, Jackson Marshall tops both his team and conference with seventy hits, sixteen doubles, twelve home runs, forty-six runs batted in, and an average of .383. The Huskies have demonstrated increased power recently by hitting twelve home runs over their last four games after recording thirty-nine homers in their previous forty-two contests.
ETSU comes into the series after reaching last year’s NCAA Tournament by winning its conference tournament. The Buccaneers are currently fourth place in their league but remain close to first place teams Wofford, Western Carolina, and Samford. Berlin native Jaime Palmeese returns to Connecticut as part of ETSU’s roster.
Head coach Jim Penders enters this weekend with a career record of 799-516-5 over twenty-three years leading UConn.
