The UConn baseball team secured a 4-3 victory against Seton Hall in their series opener on May 8 at Owen T Carroll Field at Mike Sheppard Stadium. The Huskies, now with a record of 28-22 overall and 11-5 in the BIG EAST, have won five consecutive conference games.
The game saw UConn come from behind multiple times. After trailing early, sophomore Jackson Marshall hit his team-leading 14th home run to tie the score at one. Seton Hall regained the lead in the fourth inning, but UConn starter Charlie West recorded two key strikeouts to limit further damage.
In the fifth inning, Peyton Jemison started a rally with a single and later scored after an errant throw on Chase Taylor’s sacrifice bunt. Rob Rispoli added an RBI ground out to bring the game level at three runs each. The decisive moment came in the seventh when Chris Cancel drew a walk and junior captain Tyler Minick entered as a pinch runner despite battling injury. Minick stole second base, advanced to third on an error, and then scored what proved to be the winning run on Taylor’s safety squeeze.
Paxton Meyers closed out the game with three scoreless innings for his sixth save of the season. Notably, Jackson Marshall extended his streak by reaching base for the 39th consecutive game and has reached base in all but one of his appearances this season. West achieved his seventh quality start of the year.
The Huskies managed only four hits during Friday’s contest but still secured back-to-back wins despite limited offensive production. Meyers has been effective pitching long relief outings this season while allowing just one earned run across four appearances spanning more than three innings each.
The series is set to continue Saturday, May 9 with an updated start time due to expected inclement weather.
