The Sacred Heart University men’s and women’s track and field teams concluded their participation in the 130th Penn Relay Carnival at the University of Pennsylvania on April 24, breaking three school records during the two-day event.
The meet saw limited entries from Sacred Heart, but several athletes achieved significant results. On the first day, sophomore Tyler Durang set a new program record in the hammer throw with a distance of 59.57 meters, finishing fifth out of 25 competitors.
On the second day, both men’s and women’s sprint medley relay teams set new school marks. The women’s team—Nyahingiva Musa, Sierra Thompson, Julia MacLaine, and Emily Raymond—finished their race in 4:04.04 to establish a new record. The men’s team consisting of Gavin Alvarez, Colin Brown, Lance Hayes, and Joshua Voorhees also broke their event’s record with a time of 3:25.76.
The Penn Relay Carnival is one of the oldest track meets in collegiate athletics and provides student-athletes with opportunities to compete against strong competition.
Looking ahead, Sacred Heart will continue its season by splitting squads between two meets scheduled for tomorrow: the Stonehill College Invitational beginning at noon and the Vassar College Invite starting at 2:00 p.m.
