The Sacred Heart University softball team will play a nonconference doubleheader against Central Connecticut State University on Saturday, April 25, with games scheduled for noon and 2:00 p.m. in New Britain, Connecticut.
This matchup comes as Sacred Heart is experiencing a strong run late in the season. The Pioneers have won four of their last five games, including victories over Mount St. Mary’s and a sweep of Iona. These results have moved Sacred Heart into fifth place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference standings with a record of 14-10.
Pitchers Emily Campion and Emily Heath have played key roles during this stretch. Campion has posted a 2-1 record with a 0.95 earned run average over her last three appearances, twice taking no-hitters into the fifth inning. Heath is undefeated in her last three outings and also recorded a save while maintaining a 2.39 ERA.
Central Connecticut State enters the weekend leading the Northeast Conference with an overall conference record of 18-3 and having won ten of its last twelve games. The Blue Devils’ offense ranks among the top teams nationally in batting average and doubles per game but their pitching staff holds an earned run average ranking outside the top 180 nationally.
Senior infielder Grace Lawton leads CCSU offensively with a .431 batting average, while fellow senior Ava Cino has contributed significantly as well. In pitching, junior Liz Hamilton has thrown fifteen complete games this season for CCSU.
Saturday’s meeting marks the fiftieth contest between these two programs, with CCSU holding a slight edge historically but Sacred Heart winning their most recent matchups. After this series, Sacred Heart will face Quinnipiac on May 1-2 to close out its regular season conference schedule.
