The Sacred Heart University softball team split a doubleheader at Central Connecticut State on April 25, winning the second game 5-0 after dropping the opener 7-6. The games marked the end of Sacred Heart’s nonconference schedule.
The split brings Sacred Heart’s record to 20-28, while Central Connecticut State stands at 24-16. The first game saw Sacred Heart take an early lead, but Central Connecticut State rallied in the sixth inning to secure a comeback victory.
In the opener, Nicole Henke contributed three runs batted in and hit a home run for Sacred Heart. Cierra Bender added two hits and scored twice. Emily Heath pitched six innings for Sacred Heart, allowing seven earned runs and recording two strikeouts. Hailey Strunk and Gracie Granate shared pitching duties for Central Connecticut State, with Granate earning the win.
The second game featured a strong performance from pitcher Emily Campion of Sacred Heart, who threw a complete-game shutout with only two hits allowed and two strikeouts. Charlene Davis went three-for-four with a double, Jess Brown had two doubles and scored once, while Elle Leckrone recorded two hits including an RBI double.
Sacred Heart achieved its tenth ten-hit game of the season during game two. Henke increased her season total to eight home runs and now has nineteen career home runs. Campion has won three consecutive games while allowing no more than three hits in each outing.
Sacred Heart will conclude its regular season at Quinnipiac from May 1 to May 2 in a three-game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference series.
