The Sacred Heart University men’s lacrosse team lost a close game, 14-13, against Marist in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action on April 18. Despite the defeat, Sacred Heart has secured a spot in the conference postseason tournament.
The outcome is significant for the Pioneers as it confirms their place in the upcoming MAAC tournament, keeping their season alive even after a narrow loss.
Matt Pepe led Sacred Heart’s offense with six points from one goal and five assists. Other top performers included Jake Carney and Dom Basti, each scoring three goals. Michael Moreschi contributed two goals and one assist, while John Murray added one goal and two assists. Ryan Grove was successful on 22 of 29 faceoffs and picked up 13 ground balls.
Sacred Heart started strong with early goals by Moreschi, Basti, and James Moran to take a lead into the second quarter. Marist responded with several runs throughout the game to keep it close and eventually took control late in the match. In the final minutes, both Basti and Carney scored again for Sacred Heart but were unable to overcome Marist’s lead.
Craig Daria made ten saves in goal for Sacred Heart during the contest.
Looking ahead, Sacred Heart will finish its regular season at home against Iona on Wednesday, April 22 at Campus Field.
