Sacred Heart University lost its final baseball game of the season to Fairfield on May 16, as a late rally by Fairfield led to a narrow 3–2 defeat for the Pioneers.
The outcome concludes Sacred Heart’s season with a record of 17-32 overall and 13-16 in conference play, while Fairfield finishes at 27-21 overall and 20-10 in conference games. The matchup was marked by strong pitching performances from both teams, with Sacred Heart’s staff recording seven shutout innings and tallying a combined total of 13 strikeouts.
Jake Friel started on the mound for Sacred Heart, delivering four and two-thirds scoreless innings with six strikeouts. Jase Schueller continued the effort with three innings pitched, striking out five but surrendering three runs in the eighth inning that proved decisive. Hector Alejandro finished out the game for Sacred Heart, pitching one and one-third innings without allowing any runs and striking out two batters.
On offense, Ronan Donohue led Sacred Heart by going three-for-four at the plate with an RBI. JW Fitzgerald scored after being hit by a pitch in the ninth inning, while Gavin Donohue contributed with a single and also scored during the final frame as part of Sacred Heart’s comeback attempt. Despite loading the bases in their last opportunity at bat, Sacred Heart managed only two runs before falling short.
The loss ends Sacred Heart’s season following competitive efforts from both their pitching staff and lineup throughout this series finale.
