The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) will begin the replacement of railroad crossings on Route 153 in Essex from April 28 to April 30, 2025. The project aims to improve safety and ensure smooth passage for motorists. During the 72-hour construction period, the area will be closed to vehicular and bicycle/pedestrian traffic.
The railroad crossings will be replaced with new materials, and a detour will be in place to guide motorists around the construction site. Despite the closure, businesses and residences along Route 153 will remain accessible.
“To ensure the safety of workers and the public, vehicles cannot travel through the area. We ask motorists to follow the posted detour routes during this short-term construction project,” stated Benjamin Limmer, the Connecticut Department of Transportation Bureau Chief of Public Transportation. Mr. Limmer noted that the project “will ensure the railroad crossings on Route 153 remain in a state of good repair, and addresses roadway surface concerns across the tracks.” He expressed gratitude for “the continued support and collaboration with the Town of Essex to minimize the impacts to the local community during this project.”
The initiative is partially funded by a CTDOT grant and executed by the Valley Railroad Company, which operates the rail line. The work is being coordinated between CTDOT, the Town of Essex, first responders, bus and transit providers, and the Valley Railroad Company. Efforts are being made to reduce the impact on local residents and businesses.
