The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) has announced that work to replace the railroad crossings on Route 7 (Railroad Street) in North Canaan will begin at 5 a.m. on Monday, October 27, and continue through Friday, October 31. The project involves a full replacement of the existing railroad crossings near the intersection of Killawee Street.

According to CTDOT, the new materials used in the replacement are intended to improve safety for motorists and support the long-term operation of freight rail service in the area. During construction, Route 7 will be closed at the railroad crossing, and traffic will be detoured via North Elm Street. Businesses and residences along Route 7 will remain accessible during this period, and detour routes will be clearly marked.

“This project ensures the freight line remains in a state of good repair. To ensure the safety of everyone, vehicles cannot travel through the work zone. We ask motorists to follow the posted detour routes during this short-term construction project,” said Connecticut Department of Transportation Rail Administrator Rich Jankovich. “We appreciate the support and collaboration with the Town of North Canaan, local businesses, residents, and the Housatonic Railroad while this important safety improvement project takes place.”

The Housatonic Railroad is carrying out the work with assistance from a grant provided by CTDOT’s Rail Freight Infrastructure Program. The effort is coordinated among CTDOT, the Town of North Canaan, first responders, bus and transit providers, and Housatonic Railroad.

CTDOT noted that extreme weather could affect the project schedule. Questions from the public can be directed to the CTDOT Customer Care Center at (860) 594-2560 or DOT.CustomerCare@ct.gov.
