The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) has announced plans to replace the single railroad crossing on Route 14A (Railroad Avenue) near Canterbury Road in Plainfield. The work will commence on May 7, 2025, and will require the area around the crossing to be closed to all vehicular, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic for about 48 hours to ensure safety during installation.

The railroad crossing will be replaced with new materials to improve safety and provide a smoother passage for motorists. This also aims at ensuring the long-term viability of the freight rail line in the area. Although the crossing will be closed, all businesses and residences along Route 14A will remain accessible, with a detour posted for bypassing the construction site.

“This project improves safety and ensures the Route 14A railroad crossing remains in a state of good repair. While this work is underway, a detour is needed to protect the workers on site. We ask the public to follow the posted detour routes during this short-term construction project,” said Benjamin Limmer, the Connecticut Department of Transportation Bureau Chief of Public Transportation. He thanked the Town of Plainfield, local businesses, first responders, and residents for their collaboration during this important safety upgrade.

The upgrades will be carried out by the Providence and Worcester Railroad, which owns and operates the rail line. Coordination among CTDOT, the Town of Plainfield, first responders, bus and transit providers, and the railroad company is ongoing to reduce impacts on residents and businesses.

The work schedule may be affected by extreme weather. For more information, the public can contact the CTDOT Customer Care Center at (860) 594-2560 or via email at DOT.CustomerCare@ct.gov.
