The Quinnipiac Bobcats baseball team split a doubleheader against the Canisius Golden Griffins on April 17 in Buffalo, New York. After losing the first game 10-3, the Bobcats secured a 3-0 win in the second game.
This result leaves Quinnipiac with an overall record of 15-21 and an 8-9 mark in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play, tying them for eighth place. The outcome is significant as both teams are competing for positioning within their conference.
In game one, Canisius took an early lead and maintained control throughout. Key moments included Christian Smith driving in Cole Constable for Quinnipiac’s first run and Chase Camac bringing home Jack Balcer. However, Canisius extended their advantage with multiple runs across several innings to finish ahead by seven runs.
Game two saw Quinnipiac respond strongly. James Marino scored on an Ian Nilsen groundout to put the Bobcats ahead early. Additional runs came from Marino reaching on a fielder’s choice and Kyle Garbowski delivering a sacrifice fly that allowed Nilsen to score. Pitcher Andrew Rubayo threw six shutout innings with eight strikeouts before Mike Poncini and Matt Alduino combined to secure the win; Alduino earned his fifth save of the season by retiring all batters he faced in the ninth inning.
Several players contributed notable performances during the doubleheader: Garbowski and Smith each went four-for-nine at bat, while Camac collected three hits over seven at-bats. Mason Ulsh struck out three batters over nearly four innings of relief work after returning from injury this season.
Looking ahead, Quinnipiac and Canisius will play again on Sunday at noon with the series outcome still undecided.
