The Quinnipiac Bobcats lost to the Fairfield Stags, 11-2, in the middle game of their series on May 2 in Hamden. With this defeat, Quinnipiac’s record dropped to 21-23 overall and 12-11 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play.
This result is significant as it affects the Bobcats’ standing within their conference as they approach the end of the regular season. The loss also highlights some ongoing challenges for Quinnipiac both offensively and defensively.
Fairfield took an early lead by scoring two runs in the first inning with an RBI single from Matt Bucciero and a bases-loaded walk by Nolan Colby. Although James Marino drew a bases-loaded walk for Quinnipiac in their half of the first inning, bringing them within one run, Fairfield continued to build its lead over subsequent innings. Key moments included a sacrifice fly by Bucciero and an RBI double from JP Kuczik in the second inning. Ryan Paine contributed with multiple hits throughout the game for Fairfield.
Alex Irizarry led Quinnipiac offensively with three hits out of four at-bats and scored once. His performance raised his season batting average to .302, making him the team’s top hitter this year. Jack Balcer added an RBI double during the seventh inning, while Caden Williamson and Chase Camac each collected a hit during the game. Despite drawing nine walks compared to only four allowed, Quinnipiac struggled to capitalize on these opportunities.
On pitching duties for Quinnipiac, Nick Balcom started but allowed five runs on seven hits over three innings and was charged with his sixth loss of the season. Relievers James Pazdera, J.c. Franconere, and Josh Lajoie finished out the game but could not stem Fairfield’s offense.
Looking ahead, Quinnipiac will face Fairfield again on Sunday for their series finale scheduled for a 1 PM start.
