The Quinnipiac Bobcats defeated the Fairfield Stags 7-0 in the opening game of their series, according to a May 1 announcement. The win improved the Bobcats’ overall record to 21-22 and their conference record to 12-10.
This result is significant for Quinnipiac as it marks their first shutout against Fairfield since April 24, 2008, and also represents their first Friday victory since facing Canisius on April 17. The team was led by Andrew Rubayo on the mound, who pitched seven innings, allowing only three hits and one walk while striking out six batters. Mason Ulsh and Matt Alduino combined for the final six outs, striking out three more batters to secure the shutout.
At the plate, Christian Smith had a standout performance with three hits in five at-bats, driving in three runs and scoring twice. Smith hit his sixth home run of the season during a three-run blast in the eighth inning and now leads his team in home runs this year. Kyle Garbowski contributed two hits and an RBI while scoring two runs, bringing his season total to 28 runs scored.
Caden Williamson also picked up two hits during the game, increasing his team-leading total to 53 this season. Alex Irizarry drove in two runs with a double in the third inning; he now leads Quinnipiac with 32 RBIs this year. James Marino added his fifth home run of the season with a solo shot in the sixth inning.
