The Quinnipiac Bobcats lost to the Merrimack Warriors, 12-11, in a closely contested game on May 15 in Lawrence, Massachusetts. With this defeat, the Bobcats dropped to a 23-26 overall record and finished 14-14 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play.
This loss means that Quinnipiac will miss the MAAC Championships for the second time in three seasons. The outcome was decided late, as Merrimack secured its place in the conference tournament by holding off a ninth-inning rally from Quinnipiac.
Quinnipiac started strong with two runs in the first inning. Christian Smith opened scoring with an RBI double and later scored on Alex Irizarry’s single. After leading early and extending their advantage to 5-1 by the fourth inning, Quinnipiac saw Merrimack respond with a three-run home run from Jayden Hamilton and then take control by scoring seven runs in the fifth inning.
Cole Constable led a comeback attempt for Quinnipiac with a grand slam in the sixth inning, narrowing Merrimack’s lead. In total, Constable drove in five runs and hit his second home run of the season during this game. Smith contributed three RBIs—including his eighth home run of the year—and now has thirty RBIs for the season.
Despite these efforts and all nine starters reaching base safely, Merrimack added an insurance run before Smith’s two-run homer gave Quinnipiac hope in their final at-bat. However, after that home run, Merrimack retired three straight batters to end both the game and Quinnipiac’s postseason hopes.
The Bobcats will conclude their regular season with a doubleheader against Merrimack scheduled for tomorrow.
