Senior Owen Karas set a new school record in the men’s 5000-meter run as six members of the Yale men’s track and field team competed at the Wake Forest Invitational on April 17.
Karas achieved a time of 13:47.74 in the 5000m Invite 2, surpassing the previous school record of 13:50.23 held by Leo Brewer since last year. He moved from twelfth to first place over the final two kilometers, closing with a split of 57.07 seconds. Florida’s Josh Ruiz finished second with a time of 13:50.12.
This accomplishment adds to Karas’s list of records for Yale, including outdoor marks in both the 1500m (3:37.52) and an outdoor personal best in the 800m (1:48.30), which ranks third all-time at Yale. Indoors, he holds school records for the mile (3:58.37), the 3000m (7:51.68), and another mark in the indoor version of the 5000m (13:51.46).
First-year runner Magnus Manley also competed in Friday night’s race, finishing thirteenth with a time of 14:03.92.
Earlier that day, four other Bulldogs ran in various heats of the men’s 1500 meters event. Junior Amaré Fields placed eleventh in his section with a time of 3:50.68; sophomore Seb Sutch was third in his heat at 3:49.67; sophomore Max Bishop finished eighth at 3:46.83; and junior Brian Gamble came eleventh with a time of 3:52.15.
Yale is scheduled to host its next meet, the Mark Young Invitational, on Saturday.
