Yale men’s basketball captain Nick Townsend was named to the Academic All-America Second Team, according to an April 14 announcement by College Sports Communicators. Townsend is the first Yale player to receive this recognition since his brother Matt earned the honor in 2015.
This award highlights both academic and athletic achievement for student-athletes. Townsend, a senior Psychology major, has excelled in both areas during the season.
Townsend led Yale with an average of 16.3 points per game, ranking eighth in the Ivy League. He also finished third in rebounding with 7.4 per game and second in assists at 4.3 per game. Over the season, he reached double figures in scoring for 28 games and recorded five double doubles.
His achievements include being named Ivy League Player of the Year for 2026 and earning two First Team All-Ivy selections during his career. He was also recognized twice as Ivy League Player of the Week and received USBWA Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week honors.
In addition to these accolades, Townsend scored 14 points at the NABC Reese’s All-Star Game, contributing as one of six West players who reached double figures in a win over the East team.
Townsend joins Tobe Awaka (Arizona), Flory Bidunga (Kansas), Tyler Lundblade (Belmont), and Xaivian Lee (Florida) on this year’s Academic All-America Second Team roster. Only fifteen players nationwide received Academic All-America honors.
