The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) has expressed its opposition to a proposed bill that would require unemployment insurance coverage for striking workers. The statement was made by NFIB State Director Andy Markowski following a Labor & Public Employees Committee hearing in Hartford, Connecticut.
Markowski stated, “State government shouldn’t pick sides in labor disputes, and small business owners and other state taxpayers shouldn’t have to pay for employees who choose to be out of work on strike.” He added that providing unemployment benefits to striking workers represents an unprecedented policy change and contradicts the original purpose of the unemployment benefits system. This system is funded through taxes on small business owners and other employers.
Governor Ned Lamont had previously vetoed similar legislation last year. The NFIB continues its advocacy efforts on behalf of small and independent business owners across the United States, maintaining its stance against policies it views as unfavorable to this community.
The NFIB has been active for 80 years, advocating at both federal and state levels. As a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization driven by its members, it remains committed to supporting small businesses since its inception in 1943.
