Congressmen Brett Guthrie and Morgan Griffith have announced a hearing on health insurance affordability, scheduled for January 22, 2026. The event, titled “Lowering Health Care Costs for All Americans: An Examination of Health Insurance Affordability,” will take place at the Rayburn House Office Building in Washington, D.C. The hearing aims to address the rising costs of healthcare and explore solutions proposed by Republicans to improve health outcomes and reduce expenses.
Chairmen Guthrie and Griffith criticized current healthcare policies, stating that they have resulted in reduced choice and increased costs. They emphasized the need for productive discussions with health insurance companies to identify factors hindering affordability, such as government interference and lack of competition.
David Cordani, Chairman and CEO of The Cigna Group, is set to testify at the hearing. Cordani highlighted three steps to enhance healthcare delivery: expanding early access to care, advancing payment arrangements based on health outcomes, and leveraging competition to lower costs. He noted that prescription drug prices have risen significantly faster than inflation, impacting many Americans.
Cordani also pointed out that a small percentage of the population accounts for a large portion of healthcare spending. He stressed the importance of preventive care and transparency in healthcare spending. Cigna has taken steps like capping insulin costs and providing biosimilars at no cost to many patients.
The hearing will be open to the public and media and can be livestreamed on energycommerce.house.gov. Media representatives are required to RSVP by January 21, 2026.
