The Hartford Hawks women’s softball team swept Gordon College in a Conference of New England midweek double header on April 22, winning the first game 9-0 and the second game 13-2.
The results mark a strong showing for Hartford as they continue their season, demonstrating both offensive and defensive strength against their conference opponent.
In the opening game, sophomore Alyssa Edwards drove in the first run with a double, while senior Gia Miccio added another with a single. Freshman Alina Weaver and senior Anita Farkash contributed key hits to build an early lead. Miccio led at the plate going three-for-three with two runs batted in, scoring twice and stealing one base. Senior pitcher Carly Mayhood threw a complete game shutout, allowing only one hit and striking out seven batters over five innings.
Miccio said after the first game, “I feel like we did a good job at adjusting to slow vs. fast pitching, we were just staying back looking for small hits nothing big. Carly’s been great, but when (the pitchers) are on, we bounce off them really easily, and it motivates us to do well at the plate.”
Game two saw Hartford maintain momentum by scoring four runs in the first inning through RBI singles from Edwards and junior Adelie Beebe. The team added more runs with extra-base hits from Beebe and Weaver; Weaver also hit a solo home run in the fourth inning. Edwards finished four-for-four with two RBIs and three runs scored; Baran went three-for-three crossing home plate four times; Beebe had three RBIs; Miccio was two-for-two with two RBIs.
Pitcher Ella Zobel started for Hartford in game two, allowing two runs on two hits across four innings while striking out six batters. Junior Alex Hassett pitched one scoreless inning of relief.
Looking ahead, Hartford is scheduled to play Johnson & Wales University on Saturday April 25th for another conference double header.
