The Hartford Hawks softball team split a doubleheader against the University of New England Nor’easters on April 26, dropping the first game 6-4 and winning the second game 9-7 during Senior Day in West Hartford.

The matchup was significant for both teams as it marked a competitive outing with late-game rallies and strong individual performances. The games provided opportunities for seniors to be recognized and for records to be challenged within the program.

In game one, senior Carly Mayhood started strong by striking out three batters in the first inning. Despite early efforts, UNE scored first in the second inning. The Hawks responded with doubles from Taylor Fitch and Alina Weaver to take a brief lead. After tying at two runs each, Arianna Hernandez drove home Gia Miccio in the sixth to give Hartford a temporary advantage. However, UNE mounted a comeback in their final at-bat with a two-run double followed by a two-run homer, sealing their win despite an attempted rally by Hartford.

Mayhood pitched six and two-thirds innings, allowing six earned runs and striking out eight over 141 pitches. Offensively, Weaver collected two hits while Miccio reached base twice and stole two bases—moving her to third all-time for single-season steals at Hartford.

Game two began with both teams scoring four runs each in the opening frame due to errors and timely hitting. Miccio tripled home Weaver in the second inning as part of her four-RBI performance that day. Alyssa Edwards contributed three hits—including two doubles—and drove in three runs. Ella Zobel pitched four innings before Gracie Hopkins took over, ultimately earning the win after allowing just one run across three innings of relief work.

Weaver reached base three times from leadoff while tying school history for most single-season stolen bases alongside Miccio’s effort on base paths.

Looking ahead, Hawks Softball is scheduled to play Trinity College in Hartford on Tuesday with games set for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
