The Hartford men’s tennis team concluded its 2026 season on Apr. 20 with a 5-2 victory against West Conn in Danbury, Connecticut.
The match marks the end of the Hawks’ campaign, providing a positive finish to their year. The result highlights improvements made by the team throughout the season and offers momentum heading into next year.
Hartford secured the doubles point by winning both #1 and #2 doubles matches. Freshman Max Poss and sophomore Jake Short took #1 doubles with a score of 6-3, while sophomore Anthony Pomares and freshman Yande Simunyola clinched #2 doubles with a dominant 6-1 win. In singles play, Simunyola won his #2 singles match decisively at 6-1, 6-0; Short followed in #3 singles without dropping a game at 6-0, 6-0; Pomares staged a comeback in #4 singles for a three-set victory (1-6, 6-3, 6-4); and freshman Jared DeGruttola rounded out Hartford’s scoring by taking #5 singles at 6-1, 6-2.
Head coach Jeff Splinter said after the match: “I’m proud of the way the men battled and showed up on match day. This first season we improved every day and every match we started to find our playing style and gained valuable experience that will suit us next year. We will be a tough team in the CNE with a lot of 4-3 matches and close results amongst every team in the conference. Sky is the limit. Go Hawks!”
With this result, Hartford finishes its season with an overall record of four wins and fourteen losses (4-14), including two wins against nine losses within Conference of New England play.
