The Hartford baseball team lost to Wentworth by a score of 6-4 in a Conference of New England game on April 21. The game was played in Boston, Massachusetts.
This loss marks Hartford’s third defeat in conference play this season and affects their standing as they pursue a top seed for the playoffs.
Hartford took an early lead when senior Jeremy Mangiameli singled home Jackson Ciccone in the second inning. Wentworth responded with a two-run single from Jake Samela. In the fourth, JJ Romatzick tripled and scored on another RBI single by Mangiameli, tying the game at 2-2 until the seventh inning. Mangiameli hit a home run to give Hartford the lead again, but Wentworth answered with two runs following three hits and an error. Alek Popovich tied it once more for Hartford with a solo home run in the eighth before Wentworth regained control with two additional runs.
On the mound, sophomore Justin Gouin started for Hartford, pitching six innings and allowing two runs on five hits while striking out eight batters. Freshman Logan Smalley recorded his first loss after allowing two runs over four outs. Michael Greco finished out the game for Hartford.
At bat, Mangiameli went 3-for-4 including a home run and three RBI. Popovich added another homer while Romatzick had two hits including a triple.
Currently, Hartford is ranked as the number two seed in their conference with a record of 10-3, trailing Endicott College (12-1) and ahead of both Wentworth and Western New England (each at 7-6). The Hawks’ next game will be against West Conn at Dunkin Park on Friday morning.
