Governor Ned Lamont and others urged Connecticut motorists to drive safely in work zones during National Work Zone Awareness Week, taking place from April 21 to 25, 2025. The event, held in Meriden, featured remarks from officials and Andrew DiDomenico’s family. DiDomenico, a Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) worker, was killed in a work zone last year.
National Work Zone Awareness Week, themed “Respect the Zone So We All Get Home,” honors the workers who ensure construction zone safety. Governor Lamont emphasized, “Every person working on our roads deserves to make it home safely at the end of the day.”
CTDOT’s Work Zone Safety Awareness Committee has promoted safety for over 25 years. Connecticut saw more than 2,000 work zone crashes and six fatalities between 2023 and 2024. Nationwide, there were 891 fatalities in 2022.
Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto stated, “Roads are not racetracks.” He urged drivers to “slow down, stay alert, and Obey the Orange.” Colonel Daniel Loughman also reminded the public of the challenges faced by highway workers and first responders.
A pilot program in 2023 issued nearly 25,000 written warnings to speeding drivers. A permanent speed camera program is planned for 2025.
CTDOT encourages public participation in Work Zone Awareness Week. April 23 is Go Orange Day, and April 25 includes a moment of silence to honor those lost in work zone crashes. For more information, visit ObeyTheOrange.com.
