Fairfield University Women’s Tennis defeated Niagara University 4-1 on Apr. 19 at the Tennis Club of Trumbull, marking a successful Senior Day for the Stags.
The match was important as it kept Fairfield in postseason contention, with their season record improving to 7-12 overall and 5-3 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). Niagara now holds an overall record of 8-8 and is even at 4-4 in conference play. The outcome means Fairfield must wait for Monday’s match between Mount St. Mary’s and Rider to determine their final standing, as only the top four teams will qualify for next weekend’s MAAC Tournament.
Due to weather conditions, Sunday’s contest was moved indoors and singles matches were played first, with doubles not contested. After Niagara secured a win at #1 singles, Fairfield responded by winning the next four points. Anna Neyestani tied the score with her victory at #2 singles, followed by Maeve Cassidy who won convincingly at #6.
Maria Gell added another point for Fairfield with her win at #5 singles, setting up Sophia Harris to clinch the team victory by taking her match at #6. Nicolette Loeffler was leading her third set at #4 when play stopped after Fairfield secured enough points for victory.
Details regarding seeding and further information about next week’s MAAC Championship will be announced once confirmed by the conference office.
