The Fairfield University softball team lost to Siena University by a score of 3-1 in the opening game of a three-game series on April 17 at Alumni Softball Field.

This matchup featured two top pitchers from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, with Siena managing just three hits against Fairfield starter Alyssa Weinberg. In contrast, Fairfield was limited to one hit off Saints pitcher Gracie Goewey, which came from Quinn McGonigle.

Both pitchers kept their opponents hitless through four innings. The game’s first run was scored after an error allowed Siena’s Sarah Miller and Lauren Melton to advance into scoring position. Chloe Cummings then hit a sacrifice fly that brought Miller home.

Siena extended its lead in the fifth inning when Emma Petersen tripled following an infield misplay that put Cummings on base. The final run for Siena came in the sixth inning after Gianna DiMeglio reached base with an infield single and later scored on another single by Cummings.

Fairfield’s only hit was McGonigle’s infield single, but she was left stranded at second base. The Stags also drew walks from SJ Mull and Danica Silvestri but were unable to convert them into runs. Weinberg finished with eight strikeouts while allowing three hits; Goewey struck out three and gave up one hit.

The teams are scheduled to conclude their series with a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, beginning at noon at Alumni Softball Field.
