Fairfield University’s softball team lost to Hofstra University on April 14 after a four-run rally by the Pride in the top of the seventh inning led to a 5-3 defeat for the Stags.
The game was close until the final frame, with Fairfield leading for most of the contest. The loss came as all four runs in Hofstra’s decisive inning were scored after two outs had already been recorded by Fairfield’s starting pitcher Alyssa Weinberg. Lily Yepez sparked Hofstra’s comeback with a triple, and Dahlia Palacio tied the game at 2-2 with a double off the center field wall. An error then allowed three unearned runs, putting Hofstra ahead.
Peyton Shields was brought out of Fairfield’s bullpen and managed to secure the final out of the inning. In their last chance at bat, Fairfield attempted a comeback when Sarah Bielski reached base after being hit by a pitch. Ava Armuth followed up with a double that drove in Bielski for Fairfield’s third run, but their rally ended on a pop-up.
Earlier in the game, Sammie Dougherty gave Fairfield an early lead by drawing a walk and scoring on Cara Kochakian’s bunt. Danica Silvestri contributed two hits during the game and helped set up additional scoring opportunities for her team.
Hofstra did not record its first hit until after four innings but eventually broke through against Weinberg in later frames. The Stags will continue their home stand at Alumni Softball Diamond on Wednesday when they host Central Connecticut State University at 3 pm before facing Siena University over the weekend.
