David X. Sullivan, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that Roberto Muy, a 35-year-old Ecuadorian national who last lived in Torrington, has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for illegally reentering the United States after being deported.
Court records show that Muy first entered the U.S. in February 2006 using a fraudulent visitor visa and an alias as a Peruvian citizen. In June 2012, he was convicted in Connecticut Superior Court in Torrington for second-degree sexual assault of a minor. He received a sentence of 10 years’ incarceration, which was suspended after 15 months, followed by 25 years of probation. The following year, he was removed from the country and sent back to Ecuador.
After his removal, Muy returned to the U.S. illegally. On November 9, 2024, Torrington Police arrested him and charged him with illegal operation of a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs. On March 18, 2025, he was sentenced in state court to two years’ incarceration for violating probation related to his earlier conviction and received an additional concurrent two-day sentence for the motor vehicle offense.
Muy has remained detained since his arrest and pleaded guilty to illegal reentry on August 18, 2025.
The case was investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary G. Vitale.
“This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime,” according to officials.
