The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) has announced plans to update the highway signs and exit numbering along Interstate 84. This project aims to replace signs and sign supports throughout the highway to align with current federal and state standards. Changes will include new overhead, side-mounted guide signs, and on-ramp entrance signs, as well as overlays or replacements of sign panels from New York to Southington to improve retro reflectivity and nighttime visibility.

In addition to updated signage, CTDOT will transition the I-84 exit numbering system from sequential to mileage-based, which complies with federal regulations. “Replacing these signs will enhance visibility and clarity for drivers, making them easier to see, especially at night,” explained Barry Schilling, CTDOT Project Manager.

The design phase is projected to conclude in November 2025 with construction slated to begin in June 2026. CTDOT encourages public involvement in the project and welcomes community feedback. For further details about the project, individuals can contact Barry Schilling, Supervising Engineer, at Barry.Schilling@ct.gov and reference Project Number 0042-0328. A detailed list of tentative mileage-based exit numbers is available, reflecting the planned changes along the I-84 corridor.
