The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) announced on Apr. 24 that it is developing plans to improve safety and traffic operations on the Route 8 Southbound Interchange 30D off-ramp and West Main Street in Waterbury. The project is part of the New Mix Planning and Environmental Linkages Study, which addresses the replacement of the I-84/Route 8 Interchange, known as the “Mixmaster.”

The initiative aims to address current safety concerns and enhance traffic flow in a busy area of Waterbury. According to CTDOT, relocating the Route 8 Southbound Interchange 30D off-ramp will help streamline vehicle movement by situating its terminus opposite Robbins Street at Watertown Avenue, about 750 feet north of West Main Street. Additionally, Watertown Avenue will be converted into a bi-directional roadway.

As part of these changes, Bridges No. 01715 and No. 01714—which currently carry Route 8 and the Exit 30D off-ramp over Watertown Avenue Northbound—will be removed. Further improvements are planned for West Main Street, including new intersection controls, lane configuration adjustments, and installation of a new traffic signal at Highland Avenue.

Project design completion is expected by spring of 2029 with construction anticipated to begin in fall that year if all approvals are met. Funding for this project will come from both federal (80%) and state (20%) sources.

According to the official website, CTDOT has promoted safety through work zone awareness initiatives while supporting community infrastructure via grants according to the official website. The department also maintains its headquarters in Newington while managing transportation services statewide according to the official website.

Garrett Eucalitto serves as commissioner overseeing policies and initiatives at CTDOT according to the official website. The agency provides an intermodal transportation network designed to improve quality of life across Connecticut while supporting economic vitality according to the official website. Community connectivity is further enhanced through grant programs facilitating engagement with contractors and consultants according to the official website.

CTDOT encourages public feedback on this project as part of its ongoing policy commitment to keep communities informed during major infrastructure undertakings.
