The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) has announced plans to improve intersection safety at various state-owned traffic signals in Eastern Connecticut. The proposed upgrades include removing nighttime operation, installing video detection and cellular modems, and replacing traffic signal controllers and cabinets at selected intersections.
The affected intersections are located in several towns, including Brooklyn, Colchester, East Lyme, Griswold, Killingly, Ledyard, Mansfield, Montville, New London, North Stonington, Old Saybrook, Preston, Putnam, Waterford, and Windham. Specific locations include major routes such as U.S. Route 6, Route 16, Route 156, Route 161, Route 164, Route 138, Route 12, and others.
CTDOT stated its commitment to keeping the public informed and involved during these projects. The department emphasized the importance of community input to assist in developing the project. According to CTDOT, “It is CTDOT’s policy to keep the public informed and involved when such projects are undertaken. It is important that the community share its concerns with CTDOT to assist in the project’s development.”
The design phase for these intersection improvements is expected to be completed by June 2026. Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in September 2026.
