Recently, the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) organized a virtual event to discuss the current status of Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) and its implications for small business owners in Connecticut. NFIB State Director Andy Markowski collaborated with representatives from the Connecticut Paid Leave Authority to shed light on the situation surrounding PFML.

The legislation that initiated this program was passed in 2019. Employee payroll collections began in 2021 to finance the program, and the leave benefits became accessible in 2022.

NFIB has taken a firm stance against this program in Connecticut. “Thanks to our small business owners for speaking out on the issue and making their voices heard. NFIB has been very vocal about fighting this program in Connecticut,” they stated.

The event also addressed inquiries from members concerning PFML. NFIB provided contact information for individuals with additional questions, especially those who are self-employed or sole proprietors. They recommend reaching out to Amber Forrest, the Executive Assistant at the Connecticut Paid Leave Authority, and Jessica Vargas, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer at the same Authority, for more details about PFML. For those wishing to become more involved with NFIB or seeking further clarification, Grassroots Manager Julianna Rauf is available for contact.
