As the Fourth of July nears, Connecticut farmers are readying their seasonal harvests, including sweet corn and peaches, along with a variety of CT Grown farm products. These local goods are ideal for holiday festivities such as backyard barbecues or beach gatherings.
Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz remarked on the importance of local agriculture: “Connecticut’s farming community has always played a vital role in feeding our families and fueling our economy.” She encouraged residents to purchase fresh produce and other goods from local sources during the holiday weekend.
The state’s farmers’ markets and farm stands offer seasonal items like beef, pork, chicken, lamb, squash, tomatoes, peppers, blueberries, raspberries, and seafood from Long Island Sound. Agriculture Commissioner Bryan P. Hurlburt noted that “Connecticut’s farmers provide endless options of fresh, locally grown products from the ground to the Sound – a key component in establishing our state’s independence in the food supply chain.”
Beyond food products, CT Grown includes experiences such as pick-your-own fruit events and on-farm dinners. The Passport to CT Wine Country program offers visitors a chance to win prizes by collecting stamps at various locations.
The initiative not only supports local farmers but also strengthens food security and honors Connecticut’s historical role as the “Provisions State” during the Revolutionary War.
