Connecticut farmer wins outstanding young farmer award

Allyson Angelini, the owner of Full Heart Farm in Ledyard, has been recognized as Connecticut’s Outstanding Young Farmer for 2025. The award was presented during Ag Day at the Capitol in Hartford on March 19, 2025. Angelini began her farming journey 14 years ago when she purchased land at the age of 24 to pursue her passion for agriculture.

Angelini expressed her gratitude by saying, “I am truly honored to receive the Outstanding Young Farmer Award. Farming is not something I do alone – it’s a collective effort made possible by my family, our crew, and our incredibly supportive community.” She added that the recognition reflects the dedication of many who support small farms and sustainable food systems.

Despite not coming from a farming background, Angelini’s interest in food systems led her to study Sustainable Agriculture Education in college. Her practical experience includes working on various farms and an internship abroad on a sustainable farm in Italy. These experiences were foundational as she established Full Heart Farm with a focus on providing fresh food to the community.

Amanda Fargo-Johnson nominated Angelini for this accolade. Fargo-Johnson stated, “Farming is not easy, and Allyson and her family are a testament to persevering through hard times because they believe that their work is important.” She highlighted Angelini’s commitment to regenerative practices and energy efficiency at her farm.

The Connecticut Agricultural Information Council administers the Outstanding Young Farmers Program aiming to enhance urban-rural relations and appreciation for farmers’ contributions. This state-level recognition allows Angelini to apply for the National OYF award.

Agriculture Commissioner Bryan P. Hurlburt praised Angelini’s achievement: “Allyson’s recognition as Outstanding Young Farmer is well deserved. She and her family are powering the local food movement and bringing meaning to their harvests.”
