In Stamford, Connecticut, Governor Ned Lamont, along with Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto and John Emra, President of AT&T Atlantic Region, announced enhancements to wireless internet service for commuters on the Metro-North New Haven Line. This development was made possible by a $6 million investment from AT&T, which funded the installation of infrastructure at over 30 new sites between New Haven and Connecticut’s western border.

A mix of high-powered macro towers and small cell nodes has been deployed, improving AT&T’s LTE and 5G network. “Expanding the availability of high-speed networks is critical if we want to be ahead of the curve on technology,” said Governor Lamont, addressing the importance of these upgrades to cellular connectivity along the rail corridors. Five additional sites are slated for completion later this year.

This improvement is a part of Governor Lamont’s broader strategy to enhance cellular connectivity and promote high-speed technology deployment on state properties through public-private partnerships. The New Haven Line is the busiest commuter line in the U.S., making wireless service enhancement a priority for many.

“Through customer service outreach, we have heard directly from riders that enhanced wireless connectivity is one of the most requested upgrades,” noted Commissioner Eucalitto. He remarked that reliable onboard service is known to boost ridership, a trend the state aims to replicate.

AT&T’s contribution has not only improved commuter experience but also enhanced statewide wireless technology. “Dramatically improved coverage and capacity make for more productive and enjoyable train experiences,” said Emra. “This project became a reality because Governor Lamont and his team identified a need and spurred industry to action.”

The project also supports FirstNet, a critical communications platform for first responders, by deploying Band 14 spectrum for prioritized connectivity.

The state’s business community, represented by Chris DiPentima, President and CEO of the Connecticut Business and Industry Association, welcomed the improvements. “AT&T’s $6 million investment and collaboration with Governor Lamont’s office is the kind of strategic economic development that will make Connecticut a technology leader,” DiPentima said.
