The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is moving forward with plans to update pavement markings and signage at highway-railroad grade crossings in several towns across the state. The effort targets crossings in Berlin, Bloomfield, Branford, Cromwell, Durham, East Hartford, East Windsor, Enfield, Hartford, Manchester, Middlefield, Middletown, New Haven, North Branford, North Haven, Portland, Rocky Hill, South Windsor, Suffield, Wallingford, Wethersfield, Windsor and Windsor Locks.
The project aims to extend edge lines, lane lines and center lines across railroad grade crossings. This measure is intended to help prevent vehicles from mistakenly turning onto the tracks. Additionally, CTDOT will replace faded or damaged advance railroad crossing signs and markings. Selective tree trimming will also be carried out to improve visibility at these locations.
Design work for the project is expected to conclude by September 2026. If the project is approved and funding is secured, construction could begin in spring 2027. According to CTDOTâs announcement, this initiative will be funded entirely through federal sources.
CTDOT has published a comprehensive list of specific streets and roads where upgrades are planned within each town mentioned.
The department stated: “It is CTDOT’s policy to keep the public informed and involved when such projects are undertaken and important that the community share its concerns with CTDOT to assist in the project’s development.” Members of the public with questions or comments about this initiative can contact Sean Driscoll, Project Engineer.
