The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is planning upgrades to pedestrian accommodations at 24 traffic signal locations across several municipalities in Western Connecticut. The improvements are set for intersections in Bethel, Canton, East Granby, New Hartford, New Milford, Newtown, North Canaan, Oxford, Sherman, Southbury, Waterbury, and Watertown.

The proposed project will revise pedestrian amenities at these sites. Planned work includes the installation of new pedestals, pedestrian countdown signal heads, accessible push buttons for pedestrians, updated signage and pavement markings, as well as improvements to sidewalks and sidewalk ramps.

The design phase is scheduled for completion by March 2028. Construction is expected to begin in fall 2028 if the project receives approval and necessary funding and permits are secured. The initiative will be funded primarily by federal sources (90%), with the remaining 10% provided by state funds.

According to CTDOT policy: “It is CTDOT’s policy to keep the public informed and involved when such projects are undertaken and important that the community share its concerns with CTDOT to assist in the project’s development.” Members of the public who have questions or comments about this project are encouraged to contact Balazs Szoke, Project Manager, at (860) 594-2745 or via email at TrafficSafety.DOT@ct.gov. Reference should be made to State Project No. 0174-0476 when reaching out.

The upgrades aim to improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians throughout Western Connecticut’s communities.
