The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is working on plans to enhance the interchange at Route 15 and Whitney Avenue, specifically interchange 61. This project will affect areas in Hamden and North Haven.

Key changes include removing stop controls and adding acceleration and deceleration lanes at the Route 15 interchange ramps. These adjustments aim to help vehicles reach freeway speeds safely. Additionally, there are plans to remove the southbound exit 61 off-ramp and install traffic signals on Whitney Avenue. This change will facilitate turning movements for both northbound exit 61 off-ramp and southbound exit 62 off-ramp.

Further developments involve reconfiguring the Whitney Avenue Corridor near Interchange 61, which includes adding bicycle facilities and sidewalks. The project’s goal is to reduce crashes, improve operational efficiency at the Route 15 interchange ramps, and enhance mobility for all users on Whitney Avenue.

The design phase is expected to conclude by September 2027, with construction anticipated to begin in spring 2028. This timeline depends on project acceptance, funding availability, and necessary permits. The project will be funded with eighty percent federal funds and twenty percent state funds.

CTDOT emphasizes public involvement in such projects: “It is CTDOT’s policy to keep the public informed and involved when such projects are undertaken.” They encourage community feedback: “It is important that the community share its concerns with CTDOT to assist in the project’s development.”
